- Weight: 4lbs 13.5oz
- Retail Price: $698
Performance
This system is by no means a multimedia powerhouse, sporting the base model Intel Pentium Dual Core processor over the more widely used Core 2 Duo. This processor offers a slower 533MHz FSB, and much less system cache. That being the case, it still performed admirably, reaching PCMark05 scores in the 3,600 range, and a wPrime score around 45 seconds. For a computer that will be targeted towards students this provides more than enough power to handle anything form iTunes to Microsoft Word. While gaming is out of the question, that is not what this notebook was intended for.
Battery Life
The Inspiron 13 offers a 56Wh 6-cell battery which gives excellent battery life for a budget oriented notebook. Most of the time with low cost preconfigured systems the manufacturer skimps on the battery size, and you using see 2-3 hours of battery life on a good day. This system was easily peaking over 4 hours of runtime with the balanced setting and screen backlight at 60%. This is well within the range of handling a few classes throughout the school day, or a decent length flight.

Recharging Cell Phone Batteries from the LCD Screen
![]() |
Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) are developing ways to take the wasted energy from the an LCD screen that can be used in devices such as mobile phones and others.
Technology developed at the UCLA Henry Samueli researcher School of Engineering and Applied Science is an organic photovoltaic polarizer. The concept, which used the LCD screen can be equipped with photovoltaic polarizer. Thus, any light that hit the screen it can be converted for energy.
Not coincidentally, the LCD screen, such as on a smartphone, will usually be illuminated by lights from behind (backlight). Well, about 75 percent of energy from this lamp will be wasted. Yet to turn on the lights it takes 80-90 percent of battery energy.
Each LCD has two layers of polarizers, in front of and behind the scenes. What did the researchers at UCLA is basically to make a polarizer that also serves as a modifier of light into electricity (photovoltaic cells).
Aside from the backlight lamp, the screen is equipped with photovoltaic polarizer can absorb energy from the sun or even the lamp lighting the room through the front of the screen.
"Looking ahead, we want to increase the efficiency from the organic photovoltaic these polarizers, and eventually we hope to cooperate with electronics makers to implement it in real products," said Professor Yang Yang, the principal investigator of this study.
This research was supported by Intel Labs Academic Research Office. "This approach is very attractive, and could be synergy with other projects that we fund through Intel Labs," said Youssry Bouros, program director at Intel Research Labs Academic Office.
The paper about the research will be published in the journal Advanced Materials. The paper was prepared by UCLA researchers Rhui Zhu and Ankit Kumar.

Cracking open the office is to loosen a screw with a Phillips screwdriver and slide the side panel. Inside you will find only two RAM slots, both filled with a total of 6 GB of DDR3 memory. There is a PCI Express (PCIe) x16, three PCIe x1 slots free, but the power of 250 watts limits you to low-end graphics cards like Radeon HD 6450 available in the HP Pavilion 1067cb P7 (list 999, $ 99, 4 stars). There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard that could accommodate more than two hard drives, but the hard drive of 1 TB is already installed should be able to satisfy all but the most eager to download. It comes preloaded with its fair share of bloatware, but Blio, eBay, Snapfish, Kobo, Netflix, Hulu, Zino and Bing Bar.
Performance
HP Pavilion 1047cb P7 has a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5-2400 processor and 6 GB of RAM. This combination offers a wonderful computing experience. The pavilion was able to manage our multimedia tests in time, encoding a video in Handbrake to 1 minute 29 seconds, 2 seconds after the Editors Choice HP Pavilion 1067cb P7. Both systems have the same amount of time, 3 minutes 31 seconds to apply 12 filters Photoshop CS5 in our test.

The P7-1047cb our test could not run 3DMark 11, but drove 11 frames per second (fps) in Crysis at 1280 x 720 resolution, on average retail. These results indicate that this team does not play well with high-end games in 3D, but could handle World of Warcraft, with torches, and even play of light, no problem. If you need a little more on the video front, the HP Pavilion 1067cb and p7-based discrete graphics work is a little better but not ideal for serious 3D gaming.
HP Pavilion 1047cb P7 is a business interest with the consumer in search of the whole package: PC, monitor, keyboard and mouse. And slightly altered, but not as much as, for example the Asus Essentio CM6850-07 ($ 829.99 list, 3.5 stars). Current Editors Choice P7 1067cb Hall becomes a bigger screen (25 inches) and a separate graphics card. But if your budget is limited, and graphics needs are modest, the HP Pavilion 1047cb P7 is a good way to go.
